DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

About Dominican Republic:

The Dominican Republic is a Caribbean nation that shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti to the west. It's known for its beaches, resorts and golfing. Its terrain comprises rainforest, savannah and highlands, including Pico Duarte, the Caribbean’s tallest mountain. Capital city Santo Domingo has Spanish landmarks like the Gothic Catedral Primada de America dating back 5 centuries in its Zona Colonial district.

The Punta Cana and Puerto Plata strips are popular beach resort destinations. On the north coast, the Samaná peninsula lures travelers off the beaten path with its secluded Playa Rincón beach, 52m-high El Limón waterfall and whale-watching tours. Dominican cuisine is heavy on seafood, and la bandera – rice, beans, meat and sides – is the hearty national dish. Professional baseball is a popular spectator sport, and many local players move on to the United States' professional league. Passionate merengue is its official music and dance.

The country is also known for outdoor activities like snorkelling, surfing, adventure sports and hiking. Visitors can explore rainforests, desert, beaches and alpine ranges, as well the Barossa Valley's vineyards, known for their Shiraz wines.

In the Pampas are estancias (ranches) and Spanish colonial Córdoba, founded in 1573, now a university town. Mendoza is the heart of Argentina’s wine country, known for Malbecs and other red wines. In the Andes region, 6,962m Aconcagua is the Western Hemisphere’s highest peak. Straddling the Brazilian border, dramatic Iguazu Falls thunder 82m into tropical jungle.
